United Way of the Midlands promotes small acts of service to commemorate 9/11

Columbia, S.C. (September 9, 2021) – United Way of the Midlands is asking residents throughout the Midlands to participate in the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance by completing small acts of service to commemorate 9/11.

“As we reflect on the 20th anniversary of September 11, we encourage you to pay tribute through volunteer service to address critical needs in our community,” said Becky Morrison, United Way of the Midlands’ Director of Community Engagement. “The Volunteer Center is a hub for individuals to find opportunities in the Midlands to give back. Now more than ever, we need to Live United - join us with a small act of service.”

“The purpose of volunteering on 9/11 is to breathe life and hope into a day of sorrow, to extend the unity seen after these attacks,” said Sara Fawcett, President and CEO of United Way of the Midlands. “This is a small way that we can show our appreciation for all individuals who served on that day and those who serve today.” By navigating to the Volunteer Center site, anyone can find the perfect volunteer opportunity that fits their interests and abilities.

Midlands Reading Consortium

United Way’s Midlands Reading Consortium offers a library of resources including a one-to-one tutoring program, book donations, reading nook opportunities, at-home libraries through the Be a Book Bunny program, parent engagement events, guest reading opportunities for both individuals and companies and summer reading camp opportunities. Volunteers can get involved by tutoring pre-kindergarten to third-grade students for 30 minutes a week to enhance their literacy skills and make a lasting impact on their lives.

Thank a First Responder

United Way appreciates the countless hours first responders dedicate to ensure the safety of Midlands residents. Devote a few minutes out of your day to make “Thank You” cards for First Responders. This is an opportunity for children and adults to get creative and make a significant impact.
