United Way of the Midlands launches its Campaign for Good

Help us meet our $20 million goal to create generational change in the Midlands

United Way of the Midlands is thrilled to launch its Campaign for Good and invite you to be a greater part of our mission to create generational change in the Midlands and help us solve the large-scale challenges we face as a community.

The Campaign for Good began after United Way of the Midlands was the grateful recipient of an unsolicited, unrestricted $10 million gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, the largest individual donation in United Way of the Midlands’ history and one of the largest unrestricted gifts ever in the Midlands.

“That in and of itself said a lot about the work that the organization was doing, and what we decided to do as a Board was to leverage that gift,” explains Campaign for Good Co-Chair Calvin Elam. “We said, if somebody who doesn’t live in this community was willing to give us $10 million, why can’t we match that?”

Every year United Way of the Midlands faces a delicate balancing act between our short-term goal of meeting our community’s immediate health and human services needs with our long-term goal of creating generational change for the Midlands. The generous gift from MacKenzie Scott has allowed us to put more energy into our long-term goals than ever before. This includes our $4 million investment into our WellPartners program to provide free vision and dental care to those in need, as well as our continued work in affordable housing. United Way recently invested $600,000 into the “Village at Winnsboro” in Fairfield County which provides teachers with a local, high-quality home at an affordable monthly price.

Now we’re asking you--our community--to help us meet our $10 million match goal to help us fund critical work with our partners and bring our Strategic Impact Plan to life- improving education, jobs, healthcare, housing, and quality of life for all in our community.

“Campaign for Good is an opportunity to create groundbreaking work,” said Sara Fawcett, President & CEO of United Way of the Midlands. “With your help, the Midlands can become a place where families are more economically stable, housing needs are met, students, particularly young men of color, are earning college degrees at higher levels, and workforce development opportunities are abundant for those most in need.”

MacKenzie Scott chose to invest in United Way of the Midlands based on what we have done for almost 100 years. We invite you to join us in creating generational change by responding to this call to action with an answer that will echo throughout our community for another 100 years.
