United Ways across the state serve a vital role in the community. They bring together businesses, volunteers, government services and other nonprofits to address large-scale issues as well as emergencies, like hurricane response and recovery or the coronavirus pandemic. 

 

Helping Those Most in Need

  1. Promoting Stability

    You never know when a personal disaster can occur in your life or in the life of someone you love. United Ways in SC work with individuals and families to reduce food insecurity, provide transitional and long-term housing to those in crisis, and break down barriers to employment.

    2-1-1: United Ways across SC
    This program provides an information center for any person in need of local community programs and services. It is a one-stop shop to finding the right information to help in times of difficulty. 

    Basic Needs:  United Way of Anderson County
    Dollars raised through the United Way are invested in local non-profit programs that provide emergency food, shelter, utility and other assistance.

    The Bold Goal: United Way of York County
    This United Way is creating partnerships to raise working families in our community to self-sufficiency by focusing on underemployment and financial literacy. We aim to offer effective pathways for low-to-moderate-income working families to rise to the level of self-sufficiency.
     
    Youth in Transition: United Way of the Midlands 
    United Way of the Midlands formed the Youth in Transition initiative to focus on young people, age 17 to 24, who are homeless or vulnerable to homelessness or other poor outcomes due to a lack of social and financial support. 

    Behavioral Health Task Force: United Way of the Piedmont
    this task force provides training for educators to identify and understand Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs.)

  2. Enhancing Education

    There are any reasons why students hit road blocks to thriving in school. It could be economic insecurity, stress from home or trauma. Furthermore, students who are not proficient in reading by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school. 

    OnTrack Greenville: United Way of Greenville
    A community initiative supporting five Greenville County Schools to ensure students in the program stay on track toward high school graduation. It is a whole-child approach, using an innovative, evidence-based dropout prevention transformation model, to systematically address the challenges students face.

    Read Indeed!: United Way of the Lowcountry
    Trained volunteer reading tutors are matched with children in pre-K through third grade (who are identified by school literacy specialists as needing additional help) to read together for 30 minutes each week during the school year.

    Growing Great Readers: Black River United Way
    This tutoring program focuses on supporting low income students in Georgetown and Williamsburg counties. 

    Camp iRock: United Way of Pickens County
    students who are identified by the school district as needing a boost to their reading abilities and who are vulnerable to the “summer slide attend Camp iRock to receive specialized reading tutoring in a fun summer camp environment. 

    E2 Promise: United Way of Aiken County
    This partnership with the school district helps at-risk high school students graduate and become productive members of the workforce.

  3. Providing Healthcare

    For SC residents, one medical emergency or much needed medicine can eliminate the financial stability of a family or individual if not covered by insurance.

    WellPartners Dental & Eye Clinics – United Way of the Midlands
    These clinics provide free dental and vision services to low income adults and children across the Midlands.  

    Support of local free medical clinics – United Ways across SC
    United Ways across the state partner with local free medical clinics, investing in a variety of services that assist in meeting the medical needs of individuals and families at or above 200% of the federal poverty level guidelines. 

    Medical Supply Closet: United Way of the Lakelands 
    United Way recycles gently used Durable Medical Equipment (DME) and re-distributes it to those who need it most in the Abbeville and Greenwood community.  

    Healthy Tri-County: Trident United Way
    This initiative seeks to improve health outcomes in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties with: access to care, behavioral health, clinical preventative services, maternal, infant and child health and nutrition.

'Tis the Season for...

Spooky Grams

Employees in all DEW locations across the state can send a coworker a Spooky Gram that will be delivered by Halloween, and you can purchase as many Spooky Grams as you want!

Receipt of a United Way donation of $3 must be received for your Spooky Gram to be delivered on time, and you can scroll down to make a donation under the ‘Ways to Give’ section. Forward your confirmation email to Rcollier@dew.sc.gov with “Spooky Gram” in the Subject Line.

Ways to Give

To participate in the State Employee Charitable Campaign, there are three easy ways to contribute!

  1. Set Up a Payroll Deduction through SCEIS. If you need assistance in setting up your SCEIS contribution, check out the attached step by step walk-through.

  2. o Make a cash or check donation (checks should be made out to United Way of the Midlands). There are United Way points of contact in each DEW location across the state. Check out the below list to find your local United Way contact.

  3. Make a credit card donation. If you would like to donate via credit card, visit the link below to make a secure donation. Make sure you list SC DEW as the agency, and enter your work zip code so that your contribution will be counted towards our campaign, and will support the United Way nearest to you.

Did you know, in addition to the many signature programs that each United Way offers in their local community, there’s a statewide health and human services resource available to everyone? This hotline, known as 2-1-1 is hosted by South Carolina United Ways and serves as a great community resource.

2-1-1 is an easy to remember, three-digit telephone number that connects people with important community services to meet everyday needs and the immediate needs of people in crisis. It is a resource for finding assistance in your local community and can offer information on: • Affordable high quality child care and after-school care • Counseling and support groups • Health services • Food, clothing, and housing • Services for seniors and the disabled
