State Campaign Midpoint 2008
Rep. Clyburn helps United Way recognize State Agency Campaigns
Congressman James E. Clyburn took a short detour off the campaign trail to congratulate United Way and state employees on Friday, Oct. 31 at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History Center for the United Way State Campaign Midpoint luncheon.
The event highlighted the achievements of state employees – some of South Carolina's most generous philanthropists – and celebrated a shared sense of responsibility to the community as difficult economic times affect everyone.
Congressman Clyburn reiterated that a renewed sense of cooperation is necessary to navigate the difficult times that lie ahead.
"I can think of no better way to LIVE UNITED than to really agree on what needs to be done and collectively work to get it accomplished," Congressman Clyburn said.
Congressman Clyburn, who is also a former member of the board of directors for United Way of the Midlands, expressed the fact that he shares in United Way's belief that the best way to get things accomplished is to come together as a community and reach out to others.

"We should all, irrespective of our place in life, find something to do for which we are unpaid," Congressman Clyburn said. "I sincerely believe that the most rewarding of experiences come out of those things that you do because there's something that motivates you for which you do not expect any remuneration or any kind of reward outside of self-fulfillment."

As she stood in front of the crowd, holding her orange and white pom-pom, it was clear that she was an inspired woman who believes in more than the United Way annual fundraising campaign. She, along with many other state agency colleagues, have become real believers in the United Way movement and the true meaning of LIVING UNITED.
