The Speakers Bureau Message
The most important thing for a United Way speaker to understand is why United Way exists and why we hope people support its work through giving, advocating and volunteering.

So what does United Way do?
United Way does what no one, no one person, no one agency, no one company can do by itself. So what makes us so special? How can we say that? It's because United Way is not one, United Way is all of us, and we are many, and we LIVE UNITED. Because we know that together, united, we can do more than any single one of us can alone. So when you give to United Way, you create opportunities for the hundreds of volunteers, dozens of staff members, whose only goal is to use your contribution to help as many people as they possibly can. That means uniting schools, uniting teachers, uniting companies and businesses, uniting partner agencies and uniting governments to help our community.

When you give to United Way, you fund programs that get results.

How does United Way help people?
When you give to United Way, you fund programs that get results.
Example: United Way works with dentists who volunteer their time to provide free care to children and adults without insurance. They supply the labor, and we pay for the supplies. Last year, we invested $120,000 and returned $1.2 million in services. That's like turning your dime into a dollar, and that's LIVING UNITED.
When you give to United Way, you create NEW programs to meet emerging needs.
Example: Up to 20% of working families aren't claiming the tax credits to which they're entitled. They may not be aware of them, or they may be using refund anticipation loans instead. So United Way created the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to provide free tax preparation. An investment of about $100,000 returned a value of over $2 million last year. That's like turning your nickel into a dollar, and that's LIVING UNITED.

When you give to United Way, you help us secure even more funding and grants from different foundations, agencies and governments.
Example: United Way has secured a two-year grant of $350,000 to provide free Child Care Resource & Referral (CCR&R) to parents who need to know what to look for in quality child care. CCR&R also helps train child care providers to serve their clients better. That's just one example of how United Way secures millions of dollars each year to add to the value of your contribution.
